The Path
This adventure, which is still in its early stages, is divided between two major rehabilitation projects: urban and the vineyards.
Project
Of the various ruins that existed on the estate, two houses were restored and expanded, a playground for children and a swimming pool were built, and the wine cellar was fully restored and prepared for wine production.
As for the vineyards, there is still much to be done, but the difference in the main plot of the estate is already quite noticeable.
Until 2017, work was carried out to rejuvenate the older vines, aiming to improve both the quality and yield of the plants. That same year, a project to plant new vines over approximately 1.2 hectares was approved, where the classic Douro grape varieties were planted, with special care given to using the upper part of the plot for white grapes and the lower part for red grapes.
In 2018, another 1.8-hectare plot of vineyard was restructured, following the same logic. Since then, the focus has been on perfecting technological processes in viticulture, optimizing and improving best cultural practices. In 2020 and 2021, the new vineyards planted came into production.
In the short term, the future will focus on continuously caring for the older plots (30 years old), with the goal of one day turning them into old vines, as well as restructuring two more vineyard plots.
Before and After
Sustainability
The entire project at Quinta do Carvalhido was conceived and implemented with sustainability as one of its key objectives.
This vision goes beyond the boundaries of its hectares, as it is located in a region that deserves recognition, not only for the quality of its land but, above all, for the quality of its people.
Social Responsibility
Quinta do Carvalhido strives to work with local labor, whether it be the employees who are with us year-round or the temporary workers needed for the critical periods in the vineyard.
Environmental Responsibility
The journey is long, but the goal is to make the vineyard increasingly sustainable through constant improvements in viticulture practices while maintaining its and our identity.
Financial Responsibility
This project was born out of a passion for the region and the land, but we do not forget that it is a business—one that ensures our grandchildren can continue bringing Quinta do Carvalhido’s wine to consumers in the future. With this in mind, we remain conscious of the need to create value with the business we are driving forward.
